Lakers Fan Taunts Bill Simmons During Game 7

YouTube Preview Image

I'm very impressed with his diligence. As confetti rained down upon him following the clock expiring, he bashed away at his keyboard liveblogging the whole thing. I'm also suprised he gave the taunter the time of day.

"Hey what level of losing is that Bill?!"

Pretty good dude...pretty good.

Bill Simmons was on The Colbert Report?

I guess he was. I've always said Simmons should do more television (I have?). This interview was way back in 2006 when he wasn't nearly as popular as he is now. It seems he feels content to limit his visual exposure. Maybe it's in an effort to remain the proverbial "Sports Guy". The writer who isn't too big for his britches and can still connect with the fans. Nonetheless, he has the following to do essentially do whatever he wants. It is going to be interesting to see what happens when his contract with ESPN expires in 2010. Right now, it appears he is invested entirely with the company with his columns, podcasts, and the upcoming "30 for 30" documentary series on ESPN. Personally, I hope he leaves ESPN so he can have the creative freedom to branch out on more than just sports (If that's what he wants to do).

  • To continue with the Simmons love-fest, here is his three-part e-mail exchange with prize winning author Malcolm Gladwell. (Ed Note: Tommy Craggs of Deadspin appropriately called this "column" a tandem bike ride. Although it is interesting and well-written, you could possibly choke on the ego-stroking) (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3)
  • Drew Magary has a few words for the graduating class of 2009. (Ed Note: Hilarious) (Link)

Mike and the Max Dog?

Max Kellerman and ESPN Radio Agree to Part Ways

This is actually a big deal for anyone who enjoys sports talk radio in New York (Anyone?). Ever since Kellerman joined 1050, I enjoyed my drive in the hours of 10am to 1pm. He was by far the best personality on either ESPN Radio or WFAN. He kept it fresh, smart, and innovative. Where will he go off to next? It has been rumored by multiple sources that he will be joining Mike Francesa on The Fan. If this turns out to be true, I have some thoughts on the matter:

  • I understand that Francesa, in an attempt to connect with a younger demographic, has reached out to many ESPN personalities to take over Chris Russo's (Mad Dog) old spot. Francesa has been on the air for over twenty years and basically for twenty years he has had the same audience. Although it is a large audience, the younger generation just does not connect with an old, angry sports fan who ignores OPS and ERA+. With the addition of Max Kellerman, his show will probably take a significant spike in the ratings. Combining both demographics and eventually becoming somewhat of an old-school, new-school type show. It could be an enormous success
  • The problem with this is simple: Both Francesa and Kellerman consider themselves the voice of reason. Very rarely do either of them yield to an opponents perspective.

What could follow may very well be the greatest or worst show in the history of sports talk radio. But yet again, this is all speculation and for all we know, Kellerman could focus exclusively on boxing or go to Sirius to join the Mad Dog. The next few days will provide the answers.

*In Bill Simmons' most recent podcast, he and his buddy JackO muse on the idea of taking over Kellerman's 10am-1pm spot on 1050 ESPN Radio. All kidding aside, THAT would be nothing short of an enormous success. By all accounts, Simmons is considered the best sportswriter in the country and has a tremendous following for his podcasts. If a well known Boston sports fan and his Yankee fan friend were to argue sports daily in the world's largest media market, they could take over the world (I use hyperbole too much).
